Hera

£2,200.00

Original oil painting on gesso board
Painted area: 70 × 50cm
Framed: 81.5 × 61.5cm

Hera: Greek Goddess, Olympian queen of the gods, goddess of marriage, women, the sky and the stars of heaven. Often depicted as the shrewish and vindictive wife of Zeus by male storytellers, I choose the storywriter’s perogative to change the narrative. Here she is ancient, modern and timeless; smart, powerful, and poised. She reaches down to pull others up behind her.

Hera’s accompanying familiars are all part of her story in Greek mythology and ancient art. They include the lion, heifer, peacock, cuckoo, and crane. Each has a role to play in building of the myth of Hera, and each carries a symbolic meaning.

This painting is framed with an off-white painted wooden frame.

If you enjoy Greek myth, you might also like this painting of Medusa, or this equine painting of Aeolus, god of the four winds.
