Protection

£690.00

An original oil painting on cradled board, 40cm x 40cm

This is about woman’s need to preserve her inner freedom with an outer show of strength. It’s also about the protective role that women take over their family, especially their children, and the lengths they will go to to shield them.

The swan embodies strength, and is a nod to the Norse myth of the Swan Maiden, who can retain her freedom and transform and fly away at will as long as she retains her ‘winged cloak’.

Birds in flight have long been used as a symbol for freedom, and the little birds at the bottom of the painting are all residents of Oxford.
