Plucked from Eden

£1,200.00

Oil on canvas covered board

Painted area: 50 × 40cm

This is a re-imagining and merging of our creation myths, and a story of hope. This piece disrupts the traditional narrative, and imagines an interconnected alternative where Adam and Eve never fall, thanks to the intervention of the Great Cackler (or cosmic goose) from Ancient Egyptian creation myth.

It’s about hope, a disrupted narrative, regeneration, love and an alternative way forward for all of us.

I also drew inspiration from the fantastic narrative frames of medieval illuminated manuscripts.

Creation stories and symbolism here include:

- Adam and Eve, the apple tree and the snake from Eden (the creation story is a little disrupted by the divine goose in this version, for a more hopeful future…)

- The goose, who according to Ancient Egyptian creation myth lays the cosmic egg that heralds the origin of the world. (In ancient Celtic Christian belief, the wild goose also represents the holy spirit.)

- The cosmic egg from which the world is born, which may also be the sun, depending on how you interpret Ancient Egyptian creation stories

- The gates of the underworld (illuminated manuscript style)

- The holy grail for unity with the divine (whatever that means to you)

- The apple seed as a source of life, and Eden’s fated apple tree, guarded by its dragon protectors

- Love as a source of life and power

- The phoenix - a symbol of regeneration, hope and better things to come
